Marqueyssac, one of the most dramatic gardens in France, is perched precariously above the sinuous River Dordogne between La Roque-Gageac and Beynac-et-Cazenac. Here, on terraces with breathtaking views on all sides, is la folie de buis – a triumph of topiary.
But Marqueyssac is far removed from the rigid symmetry and geometric form of most clipped-hedge gardens. These hanging gardens are a swirling maelstrom of rounded box that wells and bubbles in voluptuous abstract shapes – the visual impact is stunning.
